I was on assignment in Liberia in March 2014, shooting a short documentary for Plan International, looking at a group of women and their lives 13 years after the end of the civil war (Daughters of War in the Film section and here at the end of this series of images). Each day we traveled to Tubmanburg, a town north of Monrovia that saw heavy fighting in the war, and I made photos when I could – less for the film than to try and gather a brief impression of the country.
The road from Monrovia to Tubmanburg would have been very familiar to my friend, the late Tim Hetherington, who lived and worked in Liberia during the war. I thought a lot about Tim as we made our way each day to and from Tubmanburg.
